Igor Arume (b. BR, 1991) is a designer1, visual artist2, researcher3 and collector4 working at the multiple intersections between design, publishing5 and printmaking6.

  1. My design practice focuses primarily on typography, editorial design and identity.
  2. My artistic practice originates as a research-based exploration of archive material and found imagery. Removing the source material from its original context activates these image-based archives using appropriation, image sequencing, and collage, creating new associative meanings, friction, and alternative narratives. In a time of oversaturation, my (post-)photographic practice carves out and repurposes pre-existing images to answer ontological questions about the nature of images themselves: the status of authorship, ownership, and the technical means of reproduction, locating it throughout the history of media.
  3. My research interests range from design history, designer-as-author to media archeology and the transformations of graphic design labor through the means of production and technology.
  4. I collect stencil-printed material culture — specially printed in Risograph duplicators — since 2012 at Riso Ephemera︎︎.
  5. I investigate critical issues within the fields of design and media like appropriation, found image and publishing as artistic practice in self-initiated projects.
  6. I'm interested in exploring the aesthetic qualities, ideological potential and technical limits of stencil duplicators as a means of production for self-publishing and artists’ books while pushing the boundaries of the printed medium.
